Heritage Statement

'Luma Luma the Giant came to the shores of western Arnhem Land from far off Macassar in the Dreamtime. Like all Ancestral Beings he could change his shape at will, and for travelling through the sea he transformed himself into a stingray. He settled with his six wives and many children on the mainland, where he changed back into a man and showed the people the totemic emblems, which he had brought with him in a large woven pandanus dilly bag. He visited the camps of all the Aborigines to teach them about the Mardayin Ceremony, which he owned. It was also his intention to lay down facets of law and discipline, which would guide their behaviour through their lives.'
